January High Performance Camp Offers Preview of Full-time Residency
LITTLE ROCK, Ark., American Rugby Pro Training Center (ARPTC) will be hosting a January High Performance Camp to be held at the Little Rock, Arkansas professional rugby sevens training facility. The camp will run from January 15 through 18.
The camp is the fourth in the 2015-16 series and like previous camps, will offer athletes a chance to develop key skills as well as experience a preview of the program’s full-time residency environment. ARPTC is the only USA Rugby Sanctioned National Development Academy with a full-time residency program.
Coach Chris Ryan will attend the ARPTC High Performance Camp as a guest coach. Ryan has been coaching and playing rugby for over 35 years and ARPTC Lead Coach Ellie Karvoski is looking forward to having him step into the role.
“Chris Ryan is an excellent technical skills coach and a tremendous resource as he has become a reservoir of rugby knowledge over the course of his rugby career,” said Karvoski. “We are excited for him to share his insights and rugby tools with the players, and also with our staff. Cultivating and maintaining a constant curiosity is a crucial element for development, which is why we encourage guest coaches and apprentice coaches to be a part of our high performance camps.”
Ryan has spent the last few years as Women’s Head Coach at Princeton University. In the last four USA Rugby College 7s National Championships, Princeton has come in third three times, and won the shield once. Since coaching Schuylkill River Rugby's 7s summer program he has led the team to qualify for nationals each year—finishing as high as second in 2011, and 6th last year.
Throughout the camp, Ryan and ARPTC Coaching Staff will serve as player advocates and focus on creating a positive experience, as well as supporting the player’s goals and intentions for the camp, which are set in the initial player meeting. Players learn valuable rugby tools in a low-pressure environment that allows for problem solving and repetition as an elite athlete. .
Over three and a half days camp attendees will receive a first-hand look at the full-time residency experience, have the opportunity to spend time with current ARPTC residents, and learn valuable tools for any athlete competing at an elite level. Karvoski explains the benefit of those tools both on and off the field.
“What really sets us apart from any other type of program is the supportive environment that’s inherent in a place where athletes can fully immerse themselves,” said Karvoski. “The staff and residents are very much a family and that enables players to learn from each other, share rugby knowledge, and most uniquely, learn life skills like athlete nutrition, cooking tips and how to take care of yourself in a high performance environment. Residents have created a home away from home at ARPTC.”
Participants are selected for the camp by the ARPTC coaching staff through a coach’s referral. Players interested in participating in the January High Performance Camp should have their current coach submit a referral via the ARPTC website. Details can be found at www.americanrugbypro.com.
Rolling enrollment for full-time residency also begins January 15th, 2016. Residents are hand selected by the ARPTC Coaching Staff after seeing players participate at an ARPTC 7s High Performance Camp, and/or via a referral from a club team coach, USA Rugby National Team Coach, or USA Rugby Academy Coach
